Finding a mill here or there on Ebay or at a vintage store, is an exciting score for any mid century fan. If you're a serious (and flush) collector, you could purchase a large grouping of the original teak designs at 1st Dibs collection. For me, a trip to the Sam Kaufman Gallery is in order, next time I'm in LA. Each mill has been displayed on it's own wood block across the gallery wall.

JENS QUISTGAARD MILLS
Though Jens Quistgaard's designs can be found though homes all over the world, my absolute favorite are his teak mills. Each one is sculptural and full of personality. When he founded Dansk in 1954, the mills were among the first of his designs.

Lauren Manoogian
As the cool Fall weather is slowing approaching, I'm looking forward lots of soft cozy knits. Brooklyn based Lauren Manoogian attended RISD and Central Saint Martins to study knitware and textile design. Her designs are created using a handmade loom process and working with organic yarns. Each piece is simple yet sculptural and with an aesthetic heavy in art and design rather than fashion.

Road tripping
Looking forward to an upcoming roadtrip to Vermont with friends for the 4th of July holiday this week. Hoping it's filled with lake swimming, fire pits, waterfalls and some local farm stone fruit. Even sweeter, is if we were camping in one of these "professional wanderer" kitted out vans.
One of Jay Nelson's geometric wood hubs.
Last four images are from Van Life tumbler. Easy to become obsessed with every single van on here.

Inspired by Mexico City today...
Led me to search out a roundup of the famous 1950's chair from Acapulco. We actually chased down a truck full of them through the streets of Roma on the last DF trip. The chair made it home to Brooklyn, to enjoy sipping these throughout summer.
The classic bucket seat of woven nylon string has been updated to interior versions, leather, multicolor, sofas and rockers, all with a variety of colorful powder coated bases. So many styles and favorites to choose from.

Raining day in NYC...makes me miss Mexico City
Land of bright colors and textures.
From a visit in the Fall of 2011...it's been too long. I'm due for the next.
and of course, tlacoyos, in which we ate our weight in ever chance we got.
All photos my own.

Commune Designs from LA
One of my all time favorite design firms is Commune in LA. They seem to have their hands in everything....architecture, furniture, product design, graphics and packaging, textiles, hotel, restaurant and retail store design.
Collabs with artisan ceramicists Heath and sculptor Alma Allen further illustrate the approach to aesthetic in everyday objects.
Photos all from Carnation St project here.
